The Relationship between Retirement and Depression of Elderly Men: Analysis of Mediating Effect of Social Contact and Mediated Moderation Effect of Utilizing Electronic Devices

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to verify the mediating effect of social contact and the mediated moderating effect of the electronic device utilization in the relationship between retirement and depression of elderly men. The data used here were from the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans, and 3,979 elderly men among the entire respondents were selected for final analysis target. And it was verified using the PROCESS macro analysis method of Hayes¡¯s (2013). The results showed that retired elderly men had significantly higher level of depression than non-retired elderly men, and social contact had a partial mediation effect. In addition, electronic device utilization had a mediated moderation effect in the relationship between retirement and depression and the relationship between retirement and social contact. This is to say that the utilization of electronic devices has a moderation effect that alleviates the increased levels of depression and social isolation after retirement. These research results can be utilized as important basic data for practical intervention to promote elderly men¡¯s social contact and encourage active social participation using ICT to reduce the depression of elderly retirees.
